This International Standard will evolve through the publication of corrigenda and amendments, as well as republication of this International Standard. In a similar manner, EDCS dictionary entries registered for use with this International Standard will need to evolve. Of particular concern is when an EDCS dictionary entry needs to be changed or declared obsolete. Declaring an EDCS dictionary entry obsolete is called deprecation. This annex defines a process for change and deprecation of both standardized and registered EDCS dictionary entries to ensure the long term coherence and orderly evolution of the concepts in this International Standard. It also defines how a deprecated EDCS dictionary entry may be reinstated.
Redefinition of an EDCS dictionary entry means changing that entry to such an extent that it would require amendment or republication. That is, the entry would no longer represent the same concept or the EDCS code and/or EDCS label would no longer denote the same concept.
Reuse of an EDCS code or EDCS label means assignment of that EDCS code or EDCS label to denote a different concept than originally assigned.
To insure stable evolution while protecting the investment of users, care shall be taken when changes are made to EDCS dictionary entries, whether they were originally defined in this International Standard or later by registration. The following rules apply both to changes to this International Standard by amendment or republication and to changes to registered EDCS dictionary entries:
Changes to the extent allowed in corrigenda may be made to an EDCS dictionary entry in this International Standard.
Changes to an EDCS dictionary entry in this International Standard not permitted by corrigenda shall be accomplished by deprecation following the procedure defined in G.3.2 Deprecation of standardized EDCS dictionary entries.
No changes of any type shall be made to any EDCS dictionary entry defined by registration, in accordance with [I9973]. Instead, the existing registered EDCS dictionary entry shall be deprecated following the procedure defined in G.3.3 Deprecation of registered EDCS dictionary entries.
No EDCS code or EDCS label shall be redefined or reused except by the process of reinstatement defined in G.4 Reinstatement.
Deprecation provides an orderly process whereby either this International Standard or the ISO International Register of Graphical Items may retain deprecated EDCS dictionary entries and indicate to users that these deprecated EDCS dictionary entries should not be used in new applications. Distinctly different procedures are used to change International Standards from those used to change registered EDCS dictionary entries. Therefore, two different deprecation procedures are specified.
The committee responsible for the development of this International Standard shall publish and maintain a standing document containing lists of all deprecated EDCS dictionary entries, the reason for each deprecation, identification of the document(s) that implemented the deprecation (amendments, republications, or registration proposals) and a link to the current online version of the deprecated entry. This document shall be made available on the World Wide Web and shall be referenced (that is, linked to) by both the ISO International Register of Graphical Items and future amended or republished editions of this International Standard.
The following rules apply to deprecation of standardized EDCS dictionary entries:
A deprecated EDCS dictionary entry shall be moved by amendment or republication to an annex containing a table of deprecated entries in the applicable EDCS dictionary within this International Standard. This International Standard contains Annex B for this purpose.
The row(s) in the tables that previously defined the standardized EDCS dictionary entry shall be removed by amendment or republication. There shall be no indication in the table itself that the entry that once occupied that row is now deprecated. Note that by G.2(d), removed EDCS labels or EDCS codes shall not be re-used except by reinstatement.
Once an EDCS dictionary entry has been published in Annex B of this International Standard for a period of at least five years, it may be deleted from that annex (and therefore this International Standard) by amendment or republication.
The following rules apply to deprecation of registered EDCS dictionary entries:
Registered items cannot be modified, only deleted [I9973].
A registered EDCS dictionary entry to be deprecated shall be deleted from the ISO International Register of Graphical Items following the procedures defined in [I9973].
The deprecated EDCS dictionary entry shall be added to an annex containing a table of deprecated entries in the applicable EDCS dictionary within this International Standard by amendment or republication. This International Standard contains Annex B for this purpose.
The registrar of graphical items shall replace the deprecated EDCS dictionary entry in the ISO International Register of Graphical Items with a note stating that this item has been deprecated, removed from the ISO International Register of Graphical Items, and is or will be specified in Annex B of this International Standard.
The registrar of graphical items shall also provide a hyperlink from the note to an online version of the deprecated EDCS dictionary entry (whether in this International Standard, or the latest version of an amendment or republication in process).
Reinstatement provides an orderly process whereby this International Standard and the ISO International Register of Graphical Items may promote previously deprecated EDCS dictionary entries back to standardized status.
A deprecated EDCS dictionary entry may be reinstated by moving it from Annex B back into the appropriate main table defining such an entry in Clauses 5 through 8 and Annexes C through F of this International Standard. The process of amendment or republication of this International Standard shall be used to accomplish this move.
Following the procedure defined in G.3.3 Deprecation of registered EDCS dictionary entries, deprecated registered EDCS dictionary entries are deleted from the ISO International Register of Graphical Items and moved to Annex B of this International Standard. Therefore, a formerly registered EDCS dictionary entry can be reinstated by following the procedures of G.4.2 Reinstatement of standardized EDCS dictionary entries.
